Senita and Type 1 Diabetes

When we hear the word diabetes we often think of a disease that can be controlled with weight management, nutrition or exercise. And while that’s mostly accurate for Type 2 Diabetes, which represents 95% of diabetes cases in adults, Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an entirely different animal. T1D is an autoimmune condition where the body attacks its own pancreas cells, resulting in the inability to produce insulin.

People living with type 1 have to inject or have insulin pumped into their system to balance their glucose levels and prevent complications and organ damage. Typically, the disease is diagnosed in childhood and used to be called Juvenile-onset diabetes. However, it is sometimes diagnosed later in one’s life.

That being said, people with type 1 diabetes can lead long, active lives. We’ve met some amazing women who are living proof that despite the inconveniences of constant monitoring, pricking, and pumping, you can inspire others and put the disease in a positive perspective.

Here at Senita, we have been influenced by the Type 1 Diabetes community since we started. Our own brother is thriving with T1D after being diagnosed as a teenager. We were also eager to keep T1D women in mind when we’ve designed some of our products over the years.

The Sarah Sports Bra was designed with the help of our friend, Sarah Hannon, who lives with T1D. After discovering Senita a few years ago, she reached out and asked us to design a sports bra that would fit her insulin pump. We literally jumped at the chance to create a product that would help others enjoy a healthy lifestyle. It was not only important but extremely personal. The pockets in some of our other products are also perfect for insulin pumps, snacks and a lot of other necessities that the T1D community seems to appreciate.

To kick our support into another gear, we’re now teaming up with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) for National Diabetes Awareness Month this November. JDRF is a nonprofit 501 that funds Type 1 diabetes research and helps create new medical device breakthroughs. They are truly an amazing organization and worthy of our support. To do our part, we’re donating 10% of our ‘Sweet Blue’ item sales during November to their efforts.

Our Sweet Blue line features tops, bottoms and a manifesto-like tank to inspire and motivate. Even the dots on our Sweet Blue leggings represent something worth contemplating — each time someone has had to test their blood sugar. The more people we meet who are rising above T1D, the more we are in awe. You are all survivors, thrivers, and inspirers and we are proud to have met and served so many of you along our journey.

You don’t let numbers run your life.

You don’t let labels define you.

You don’t take ‘no’ for an answer.

You’re our type of people.

You can help us promote National Diabetes Awareness Month by sharing and participating in our promotion which will allow us to give even more to this important cause.
